A Story About Twins and “Worth”

Here is a great story that illustrates how we view self esteem and how our perspective changes as someone ages.

Picture twins: a boy and a girl, 7 years old.

•She is a violin prodigy and is likely heading to Juilliard.

•He is an ADHD mess who still can’t color in the lines and can’t turn in his homework on time (yes, 7-year-olds have homework)

Which of them has more worth? Or more value?

When I ask this question in person, most people look at me like I’m crazy.

They’re seven!

Neither is worth more than the other.

Now flash ahead 30 years with the same twins:

•She is that violin prodigy who teaches at Juilliard and is first chair in the New York Symphony Orchestra. 🎻

•And he remains an ADHD mess who can’t hold a job and lives in their parents’ basement.

Now, tell me who has more worth or value.

This is Achievement-Based Self Esteem.

This is how we look at adults in today’s world.

These are the same 7-year-old twins who had the same worth.

Yet in adulthood, it looks different.

Adults struggle to see these twins with the same value.

Let’s remember the sentences of healthy self-esteem:

I have worth because I was born.

I stand equal to all, eye to eye and toe to toe. Nothing I say or do adds to my value nor detracts from my value.

I am enough and I matter, in spite of my flaws and imperfections.

And yes, I’ve had some clients who look at these twins at age 7 and already see them differently. So the question for you becomes: at what age do you stop believing in inherent worth?

How young do you need to go in your mind for these twins to still be equal?

Another question is: how old can you go and still believe they are equal?
